The pg电子下载 State University Extension/Research Farm & Technology Transfer Center was established in the spring of 1995, utilizing forty-five (45) acres of land leased from the North Bolivar County Development Corporation. This Center is proud to be the first off-campus agricultural educational outreach center in the history of the pg电子下载 State University Extension Program dedicated to Extension and Research demonstrations. Located in Mound Bayou, Bolivar County, Mississippi, the Center serves a low-income rural area in the heart of the Mississippi Delta.
This region faces challenges where traditional agriculture and off-farm employment are insufficient solutions for many families struggling to make a living from small family farms. In response, the pg电子下载 State University Extension Program (ASUEP) has placed special emphasis on sweet potato production in the area. Research and demonstrations focused on sweet potato production and marketing are conducted at the center in collaboration with scientists from pg电子下载 State University, Mississippi State University, the USDA/ARS Research Station in Stoneville, Mississippi, and local farmers.
Additionally, the outreach center has broadened its focus to include a variety of viable alternative agricultural enterprise solutions. This includes crop rotation demonstrations featuring various horticultural crops as well as ornamental products.
The center aims to educate farmers on sustainable horticultural practices with an emphasis on the following areas:
- Soil and crop management, focusing on cultural operations and efficient fertilizer use
- Cropping systems for crop intensification and effective farm management
- Pest control and management
- Improved cultivars adapted to the specific environments of farms and farmers
- Value-added processing, post-harvest handling, and marketing strategies
The goals of the Sustainable Horticulture Production System Planned Program will be achieved through:
- Research and demonstration efforts
- Spring and fall field days
- Implementation of “Train the Trainer” education programs for farmers
- Workshops and seminars for farmers
- One-on-one technical assistance
